One hundred years since the birthday of Stepan Bandera postage stamp
For Ukrainians, Stepan Bandera became a true symbol of the struggle for statehood and independence. From a young age, Bandera joined the Ukrainian Organization of Nationalists. Adhering to radical views, he firmly defended the interests of Ukrainian statehood. He headed the OUN for a long time. Stepan Bandera and Yaroslav Stetsko were the authors of the Act of Restoration of the Ukrainian State on June 30, 1941. During the period of his political activity, Bandera had to both oppose the governments of Germany and Poland, and cooperate with them. The Soviet authorities considered Bandera to be particularly dangerous. After the occupation of Ukrainian lands by the Soviet authorities, the armed struggle for the independence of Ukraine did not end. The Soviet government authorized the KGB to commit the murder of Stepan Bandera, which was carried out in Munich by the spy Bohdan Stashinsky on October 15, 1959. In 1959, this same spy eliminated Lev Rebet, another leader of the OUN.
In 2008, Stepan Bandera was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. It should be noted that during the period of activity of the OUN there were many outstanding resistance figures. Everyone knows such names as Yevhen Konovalets, Roman Shukhevich, Dmytro Hrytsai, Andriy Melnyk. But thanks to Soviet and, after 1991, Russian propaganda, the figure of Stepan Bandera was turned into a real enemy, inventing many false stories and horror stories about him, trying to incite hatred for everything Ukrainian in the residents of Russian regions.
The postage stamp of Stepan Bandera was put into circulation by Ukrposhta on January 1, 2009, on the occasion of the centenary of the hero's birthday. Stamp in black and red colors, on which is depicted the portrait of Stepan Bandera. The size of the stamp is 30 * 33 mm. Postage stamps were printed in 4*4 sheets of 16 pieces per letter. The face value of the stamp is UAH 1. Circulation - 220,000 pieces. Artist V.S. Vasylenko.
