Elena Teliha Stamp Series, 1962, commemorating the 20th anniversary of her tragic death
The series of stamps issued by the underground postal service of Ukraine, dedicated to Elena Teliha, emerges as a refined yet тревожно evocative imprint of its era, where every line preserves the memory of strength of spirit and sacrifice. Printed on glossy paper, these small works of art seem to capture the light—and with it convey the quiet whisper of history breaking through the decades.
The stamps were produced in sheet form, featuring 10 stamps in different colors. The issue was created in 1962 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Elena Teliha’s tragic death. The print run is extremely limited: 400 perforated series and only 65 imperforate ones, making these items of Ukrainian philately exceptionally rare and almost sacred to collectors. Each stamp has a denomination of 25 shahy, emphasizing their belonging to the symbolic system of the underground postal service.
The series includes 10 color variations, each creating its own emotional tone:
Brown-orange
Green-yellow
Pink-green
Purple-brown
Olive-light blue
Blue-red
Crimson-black
Light blue
Yellow-gray
Dark green–purple
At the center of each stamp is a portrait of Elena Teliha, strictly framed by a geometric border that evokes a closed space of choice and fate. Her image is calm, yet filled with inner determination. She was not only a poet, but also an active figure in the Ukrainian national movement, who consciously returned to occupied Kyiv and met her death at the hands of the Nazis in Babyn Yar without renouncing her beliefs.
The colors of the stamps—bright, contrasting, almost symbolic—create a sense of a hidden code. Each stamp appears as a sign, a fragment of a greater history encoded in colors and forms.
This series dedicated to Elena Teliha is not merely a philatelic issue. It is memory fixed on paper and a voice that has not fallen silent. The presented stamps are a presence that can be felt even in silence.
