Lesya Ukrainka – Stamp Series by the Underground Post of Ukraine, 1973 (2 stamps)
In 1973, the Underground Post of Ukraine paid tribute to one of the most prominent figures in Ukrainian culture – Lesya Ukrainka. This commemorative stamp series was issued in honor of two significant anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of her birth and the 50th anniversary of her death.
Printed on glossy white paper, each stamp becomes a miniature poetic elegy, dedicated to a woman who lived by the word and fought with thought. The stamps feature a portrait of the poetess – thoughtful, profound, and intense. Her image reflects not only literary brilliance but also unbreakable will, the spirit of freedom, and quiet defiance.
The tricolor design of the stamps is rich in symbolism: the background is rendered in one color, the portrait outlines in another, and the inscriptions – "Lesya Ukrainka", "1871 * 1913 * 1963" – in a third. These silent elements speak volumes about the depth of her personality, the harmony of word and strength.
The series is known in eight color variations. The stamp sheets are divided by decorative ribbons:
-
For the 100th anniversary of her birth – the inscription "L.U. 1971".
-
For the 50th anniversary of her death – the inscription "L.U. 1963".
Two versions of the stamps were released – perforated and imperforate:

-
Perforated – 1,440 copies of each color.
-
Imperforate – 360 copies of each color.
Lesya Ukrainka
Lesya Ukrainka (Larysa Kosach) was a poet, playwright, translator, and intellectual. Born in 1871, she became one of the most powerful voices of the Ukrainian literary Renaissance. Her works are not merely artistic – they are a testament to the struggle of the spirit, an ode to the unbroken will, to inner freedom that no illness or empire could crush. Her "Forest Song", "Cassandra", "The Possessed", and "The Noblewoman" are more than dramatic poems – they are a mirror of a nation’s soul, its suffering, its resistance, and its eternal hope.
Her pen was a sword, and her heart – a sacred flame burning for her native land. She lived only 42 years, but her legacy is eternal. Lesya Ukrainka stands as a symbol of the Ukrainian woman – intelligent, indomitable, and dignified, who never surrendered to pain or oppression.
The 1973 commemorative stamp series is more than a philatelic issue. It is a tribute to a great soul, an eternal voice of freedom. It is a tribute to the poetess who inscribed Ukraine into the cultural history of the world with letters of gold.
