Non-postal stamp "City Arsenal" (1974) - a witness to history in the philatelic world
This exquisite retro stamp, created in 1974, is not only an elegant printed work, but also a symbolic artifact that reflects the care for the cultural heritage of Ukraine. It is part of the third issue of non-postal stamps issued by the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments, and was designed to raise funds for the restoration of historical sites, in particular the Lviv City Arsenal.
Technical characteristics of the Arsenal stamp
The stamp was produced in two sizes - 38 × 53 mm or 53 × 38 mm, depending on the orientation. The delicate, almost jewel-like work with perforation was carried out in two configurations: 12 × 12 ¼ or 12 ¼ × 12.
Made on high-quality white paper, it has a double-sided print, which gives it a special status among collector's items. The color solution is presented in two versions - two-color or three-color printing, which emphasizes its artistic expressiveness and historical depth.
The main image is the majestic building of the Lviv City Arsenal, which appears before the viewer in dark brown tones, as if snatched from 16th-century engravings. Its laconic and expressive contour conveys the power of the fortification architecture of the past, recalling the power and glory of ancient Lviv.
Under the drawing is a neat inscription:
"City Arsenal of the 16th century. Lviv", - like a signature of history that comes to life in graphics.
The border of the stamp carries an important message: “Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments”, emphasizing its noble mission – the preservation of national heritage. All inscriptions are made in blue and black, which harmoniously complements the overall composition.
On the reverse of the stamp – a clear and concise inscription in a rectangular frame: “Introduction fee”, which immediately reminds of its true purpose – to be not only a work of art, but also a tool for saving architectural masterpieces.
Here is also indicated the denomination, printed in a noble orange color, which adds warmth and officiality to the stamp at the same time.
Historical significance of charitable stamps for collectors
The “City Arsenal” stamp is not just a printed work – it is a symbol of the revival of Ukrainian heritage. It did not serve to send correspondence, but played a much more important role: it helped to accumulate resources for the preservation of historical monuments.
The limited edition, exceptional historical context and artistic sophistication have made this stamp a real treasure for collectors. It attracts philatelists, historians and all those who are interested in preserving cultural heritage.
Today it is not only a rare specimen, but also a silent witness to how art and history can be combined in a small piece of paper, giving us a touch of the past.
Lviv Arsenal
The Lviv Arsenal is not just an architectural monument, but a true witness to the turbulent history of Lviv and Ukraine. Built in the middle of the 16th century, it became a symbol of the power and invincibility of the city, which experienced more than one onslaught of enemies, but always remained true to its traditions and culture. The Arsenal, located in the very heart of Lviv, keeps the secrets of many eras that it has survived.
In 1554, during the reign of King Sigismund II Augustus, one of the first arsenals was built on this site, which was to serve as a storage place for weapons and military equipment. But this building became not only a warehouse for weapons, but also a center where the fate of not only Lviv, but also the whole of Ukraine was forged. Subsequently, the arsenal was repeatedly renovated and rebuilt, gaining more and more importance as a strategic point.
The mystery of the Lviv Arsenal lies in the fact that it has experienced many important events and changes that often remained unknown to a wide audience. It has witnessed numerous battles, military campaigns and intrigues, and its walls could tell stories about the glory and fall of empires. The Arsenal also performed important functions during the struggle for Ukraine's independence, in particular during the liberation struggles of the 20th century.
And although today the Lviv Arsenal is a museum where you can see numerous exhibits related to military history, you can't help but feel in the air that special atmosphere that has been preserved from the times of past eras. In its halls, preserved and reconstructed with great attention to detail, time seems to freeze, and you are transported to the era of medieval battles and military strategies.
One of the most significant moments in the history of the Lviv Arsenal was its destruction during the First World War, when the building suffered major damage. However, after the war, the arsenal was restored, and its role as a military base became important again. Today, this place not only figures in the history of Lviv, but also becomes a cultural center, where countless artifacts are stored, reflecting the struggle for freedom and independence of Ukraine.
