Khotyn battle postal block

In the heart of Ukraine, in memory of the exploits and indomitable spirit of our ancestors, on September 2, 2021, Ukrposhta put into circulation a postal block dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Khotyn. This block, decorated with the stamp "Josef Brandt. The Battle of Khotyn (1867)" was the result of cooperation with the postal administrations of Poland and Lithuania, symbolizing the unity of nations in the face of a common threat.

Art on the stamp

The postage block depicts a fragment of a reproduction of the painting by the Polish artist Józef Brandt "The Battle of Khotyn". In the center of the picture you can see the great hetman of Lithuania Jan-Karol Chodkiewicz, the commanders of the Polish army and the Zaporizhzhya Army, who united to protect Europe from the Ottoman invasion. On the other hand, on the envelope is a reproduction of the engraving of the Ukrainian painter and graphic artist Ian Greim "Khotyn Castle", which seems to transport us to those ancient times, when the fate of many peoples was decided under the walls of the fortress.

Artistic design of the postal block

The artistic design of the block is made by the talented designer Jarosław Ochendzan, who designs stamps for the Polish Post Office (Poczta Polska). Thanks to his skill, history comes alive before our eyes, allowing each of us to feel the atmosphere of those days. The stamp was issued in the denomination of W ($1.50), which corresponds to the tariff for sending a non-priority simple letter by land transport up to 50 g to foreign countries.

The block size is 79 x 51 mm, and the multi-color palette combined with offset printing creates an impressive image that transports us to the battlefield. The mintage of this block is limited to only 20,000 copies, making it a true collector's masterpiece for philatelists and history buffs.

Historical context

The Battle of Khotyn, which lasted from September 2 to 28, 1621, was the culmination of the Polish-Turkish War of 1620–1621. This confrontation was marked not only by an armed conflict between two states, but also symbolized the struggle between Western and Eastern civilizations. The decisive role in the battle was played by the Ukrainian Cossacks under the leadership of Hetman Petro Konashevich-Sagaidachny, who showed unwavering courage and strategic skill.

Envelope of the first day

From October 8 to 10, in the central part of Khotyn and on the territory of the fortress, celebrations will be held on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of this landmark event. Today's artists, like Andriy Serebryakov, continue to draw inspiration from those heroic times. His painting "Hetman Petro Konashevich-Sagaidachny in the Battle of Khotyn, 1621" is part of the series of works "Heroic Chronicle of Ukraine", which impresses with its realism and deep historical meaning.

Commemoration

The end of the battle, which was marked by the signing of the Khotyn Peace Treaty on October 9, 1621, was a victory for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which forced the Ottoman Empire to abandon its ambitious plans to conquer Europe. This confrontation showed that the united forces of different peoples can overcome any threat.

 The postal block for the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Khotyn not only honors the memory of those who fought for our freedom, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and cooperation. It is a kind of bridge between the past and the present, inspiring us to preserve our cultural heritage and values ​​that make us strong and invincible.
