Information about the first postage stamps of Ukraine.

On July 18, 1918, the first state Ukrainian postage stamps were issued, which became known among philatelists under the name "steps".

The artists of that time Antin Sereda (10, 20 steps) and Heorhiy Narbut (30, 40, 50 steps) created the plots of the first Ukrainian stamps.

Stamps  plots:

10 steps - a trident - the main symbol of the state, against the background of a stylized image of the sun, from which a ray goes to the Earth.

20 steps - a peasant in a hat decorated with ears of wheat, with a scythe in his hand. The coat of arms of Ukraine, which is small in size, attracts attention.

30 steps - the plot of this brand has become key. "Young Ukraine". The artist recreated the profile of a young girl with a wreath on her head, which is decorated with wildflowers and ears of wheat, which invites a comparison of her with a young country that has just declared its sovereignty. H. Narbut created a real folk image - a symbol of the Ukrainian spring, the embodiment of the beginning of women in a young country.

40 steps - a massive trident with a floral ornament around it. The plant ornament is assembled from many elements that are not repeated, but are artistically intertwined. At the bottom right - two crossed postal horns.
