Stamp Series "Kozatska Poshta"
This stamp series is a mysterious philatelic artifact that conceals many secrets. Issued in the early 1990s, it remains a subject of debate among collectors. Very little is known about it, and even the exact date of release is uncertain. According to some sources, the series was printed in 1993, but there is no official confirmation.
The stamps are imperforate and belong to the so-called "fantasy" or non-postal issues, making them even more enigmatic. Their appearance seems to echo the ancient times when Kozak postal services served as an invisible thread connecting military chanceries, high-ranking officers, and allies in the grand geopolitical game.
Main Characteristics of the Series:
Number of stamps: 3
Perforation: none
Gum coating: none
Denominations: in coupon-karbovantsi
Images: Kozak seals of unknown origin
Design and Denominations:
80 karbovantsi – turquoise frame with a blue design
10 karbovantsi – blue frame with a green design
50 karbovantsi – yellow frame with a brown design
The imagery on the stamps further enhances the aura of mystery: Kozak seals that could be either authentic artifacts or purely artistic reconstructions. Were they genuine symbols of the Hetmanate, or merely inspired by history? Could they have been used within clandestine networks of the Ukrainian national movement? These questions remain unanswered.
Kozak Post: Myth or Reality?
During the era of the Kozak state (17th–18th centuries), a well-organized postal system existed, ensuring the transmission of crucial orders and diplomatic messages. Couriers, often Kozaks on horseback or boats, carried letters between military offices, while major cities had postal yards where riders could change horses for faster delivery.
Some historians speculate that the "Kozatska Poshta" did not entirely disappear even after the Hetmanate was abolished but instead continued to function within underground networks, transmitting secret messages during Ukraine’s struggle for independence. Could this theory explain the emergence of the stamp series at the end of the 20th century?
Whether legend or a forgotten chapter of history, the "Kozatska Poshta" stamps remain one of the most mysterious and least studied philatelic series in Ukraine. For true collectors, they symbolize the unresolved enigmas of the past and the indomitable Kozak spirit
