Russian warship stamp is the second breath of Ukrainian philately

Ukrainian philately dates back to 1918. By this time postage stamps of Ukraine did not exist largely due to socio-political circumstances: they were destroyed in huge circulations or were exported abroad. However, the interest to philately in the world grew after the Second World War, so it began to develop more actively in our country.

Subsequently, under the influence of Russian oppression, it fell into decline again. In 2022 it was Russia's armed aggression that brought about a new period of flourishing Ukrainian philately.

The war events are always rich in different types of art subjects, as they are filled with heroism, courage and strength. So it is not surprising that Ukrainian philately was able to find a source for a new period in its development here. A stamp that became a new breath for it - "Russian warship, go...!".

The heroic fight of the Ukrainian people in a full-scale war was followed by the emergence of many phrases that have become common knowledge and famous all over the world. One of them is the quote of a Ukrainian border guard from Zmiiniy Island, which became the target of enemy attacks almost from the first days of the war. When the occupants warned that they would start firing if the military did not surrender, all they heard in response was a phrase that pointed in the known direction for a Russian vessel. In this way, the border guards showed the heroism of the Ukrainian army and all the people, who are ready to die but not to surrender and at the same time disdain for everything Russian. The phrase resonated widely in society, but despite its obscenity, it was welcomed by the general public and quickly became a symbol of courage and indestructibility.

The stamp was issued on 12 April 2022. It depicts a Ukrainian soldier with a weapon lowered in one hand, while the other shows an obscene sign symbolising disdain for the Russian occupiers. In the background is, according to the number board, the Moskva missile cruiser, which is the subject of the above-mentioned story. The postage block traditionally includes a stamp, an envelope and a postcard. The stamp circulation has become a historical one for Ukraine and amounted to 1 million, so it can be safely called the second breath of Ukrainian philately.

It was after this stamp was issued that philately in Ukraine became popular again. The public showed interest, which caused a demand for new and new stamped sheets and blocks. It was after the appearance of "Russian warship, go...!" Ukrposhta issued many more successful and equally popular stamps. Their collecting became an occupation, which attracted both different age categories and different layers of the society. Therefore we are sure that Ukrainian philately will certainly be talked about in the world again.
