Chernobyl. 40 Years of Pain, Memory, and Warning. Commemorative Stamp Sheet.

In the spring of 1986, the orchards were in bloom, and life flowed in its usual, almost carefree rhythm. The air was filled with the fragrance of apple blossoms, and the sun carried a warmth that promised a new day. But on the night of April 26, everything changed. The fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded — and with it, the illusion of safety, stability, and control shattered. A world that once seemed solid revealed its fragility.

The commemorative stamp sheet “Chernobyl. 40 Years of Pain, Memory, and Warning,” issued on April 24, 2026, is a visual requiem captured in color, form, and symbolism. Its design, created by Volodymyr Taran, unfolds before the viewer as a story divided into three parts — the past, heroism, and a warning.

The left stamp — “Chernobyl. 26.04.1986” — resembles a frame torn from that fatal night. Dark silhouettes of the reactor, distorted by the explosion, intertwine with radiation symbols spreading in waves, like invisible pain. There is silence here, yet it is louder than any sound — the silence of a catastrophe not yet fully realized.

The central stamp — “Chernobyl. Liquidator Heroes” — is filled with light and, at the same time, тревога (tension/anxiety). At its core are the images of people who stepped forward to face an invisible enemy. Firefighters, soldiers, engineers, ordinary citizens — hundreds of thousands who, without fully understanding the danger, entered the fight against radiation. For many, it became fatal. Yet their sacrifice became a shield that prevented an even greater disaster.

The right stamp — “Chernobyl. Nuclear Terrorism of the Russian Federation” — brings the tragedy into the present day. It reminds us that Chernobyl is not only the past. In 2022, the station once again found itself under threat, and in 2025, a strike was carried out on the shelter of the destroyed reactor. Radiation danger became real once more, and the world — vulnerable again.

The stamp sheet is produced in a 78×140 mm format and contains three stamps with denomination “F,” corresponding to the tariff for sending a domestic registered letter. The stamp sizes are 52.2×26.1 mm and 52.2×38.28 mm. The total print run is 60,000 copies, some of which were issued in special philatelic sets. Printing was carried out using the offset method at the “Ukraina” printing plant.

The Chernobyl disaster destroyed hundreds of thousands of lives and became one of the turning points in Ukraine’s history. More than 100,000 people were forced to leave their homes. The residents of Pripyat left without knowing it would be forever. The Soviet authorities concealed the scale of the tragedy, while radiation had already spread across Europe — it was detected even in Sweden.

Chernobyl is a pain that does not fade, a warning that echoes through the decades. It happened once — but its consequences continue. And in each of these stamps lies a reminder: humanity has no right to forget
